About me

Hello!
My name is Aris Spijker, and I am a born and raised Amsterdammer.
‍
I was never much of an athlete as a child and teenager, but around the age of 20 I discovered my passion for sports in Calisthenics, bodyweight strength training.

After graduating as a historian, and spending five years managing in the hospitality industry, I decided to make my hobby, working out outdoors, my job.

Partly because of this, I developed broad interests in people and in the world.

In 2021, I founded my small business, Westerparkfit, out of my belief in all the beautiful aspects of working out outdoors. I felt that more people should experience those beautiful aspects.

In 2022, I began the Milo Performance & Education training program of the Vondelgym to further deepen my knowledge and become an officially certified personal trainer.

From Westerparkfit I now also offer personal training in Amsterdam Zuid and Amsterdam West, so that more people can experience how much freedom and energy outdoor exercise gives.

Besides my work, I have many interests and hobbies such as: traveling, music, philosophy, DJing, and going into nature.

"After my pregnancy, it was difficult picking up my exercise routines again. The gym is not my thing, and I find exercising independently difficult without a big stick. Now that I train with Aris, I have a schedule that allows me to work out on my own, and I actually know what I'm doing. We focused on the things I thought were important: a strong core, strong ankles and learning how to do a pull-up. Aris is very flexible: we could always reschedule our regular time when I as a single mom was not able to find a babysitter. It's not even a problem if my little daughter comes along. "What I didn't expect was that besides growing physically, I would also grow mentally through the training sessions with Aris. I notice that nowadays I complain less and less when things get tough, and I am less self-critical when an exercise doesn't go well right away. I have quite a few chronic painfull injuries, including in my lower back, which prevent me from doing some exercises. Fortunately, Aris takes this into account, takes my complaints seriously, and together we discuss what is possible. My core is stronger now, which helps prevent back pain. I actually did not know how to use my abdominal muscles before I started training with Aris, I found out. The training park always has a nice atmosphere, and it is very nice to be outside.

Before training with Aris, I used to believe calisthenics training was VERY hard, something just for very fit people. Now I see that it's just a matter of consistency and dedication. It's a step-by-step process, and along the way you'll have small but important wins. I can clearly notice I am getting stronger in my upper body, which I chose as our focus point. I started not being able to do a push-up, but now I can proudly say I can do 10 of them per set. Aris is a super positive, patient, and supportive person that pushes me to become my best version. He also gives me personalized training programs for me to do on my own, and advises about improving my sleep, daily routine, and diet, which help a lot with becoming that best version.

Authenticity is Aris' greatest strength in my opinion. I personally don't like it when trainers do overenthusiastic encouragements or "motivational quotes". Aris makes sure you get the best you can out of yourself, but does so in a fun, relaxed way. In addition to excellent knowledge about physical training, he has a wide range of interests and a lot of interest in you as a person. That is why we often have interesting conversations too. I started training during Corona and mainly wanted to get fit again. Thanks to training twice a week I immediately made a lot of progress in the first months and this has continued steadily since then. Also, Aris is flexible in terms of moments in the week to train, which makes working out easier to fit into my busy schedule.

Aris really knows how to make me push my limits without pushing me in an annoying way. Even though it is sometimes hard to get out of bed early to train before going to work, I know that I will feel great the rest of the day when I have trained with Aris. I like that we have a set time during the week, and that he encourages me to train independently as well. That way I keep making progress. I am most proud of my progress within the "Pull-up" exercise. When I started 2.5 years ago I could maybe barely do one of them, now I can do twelve in a row!

Frequently asked questions about personal training Amsterdam Zuid

Where do the personal training sessions take place in Amsterdam Zuid?

The trainings are usually held in the Beatrixpark or the Vondelpark, two beautiful green areas in the middle of Amsterdam South with plenty of opportunities to train effectively. In consultation we can also divert to other parks or outdoor locations in the neighborhood, so it always fits your needs and travel time.

Can I also train together with a friend in Amsterdam Zuid?

Yes, you can! Personal training doesn't always have to be solo. Duo training is very popular and small groups of up to three people are also possible. From four participants it takes more the form of a private group training. We are happy to discuss with you how you would like to organize it and what rates are appropriate.

Am I stuck with a subscription when I start personal training in Amsterdam Zuid?

Basically, we always work in blocks of 8 weeks with training schedules based on an intake in which goals, nutrition and lifestyle are discussed. This ensures commitment from both sides and also ensures the best results. Single training sessions are possible but have a higher rate as described above.

How often is personal training in Amsterdam Zuid recommended?

At least once a week is a good start. If you want faster results and want to learn more about movement and technique, I recommend training together twice a week. That way you'll get the most out of the program and you can reach your goals faster.

Yes, I am officially certified personal trainer through Vondelgym's Milo Performance & Education training program. This training is recognized by the European Register of Exercise Professionals (EREPS), an independent European quality registration for trainers. So you can be sure that you will receive professional and safe guidance.
